Q - What is a Pinewood Derby?

A  - A Pinewood Derby is gravity-powered race with cars constructed from a 7" x 1 3/4" x 1 3/8" block of wood.  Plastic wheels are attached with nails provided in the kit.  The rest is up to the imagination of the Scout and parent.  With millions of cars being made since 1953, the final designs have been very creative ranging from vary basic to very elaborate.  Some will look like race cars, while others are built to look like everything from food to abstract art.

A typical track is 25-50 feet in length with the first 6-8 feet being inclined to get the cars moving.  Tracks have either center or edge guides to keep the cars in their lanes and are constructed from a variety of materials including cardboard, wood, plastic, and metal.
